Situated in the heart of downtown Calgary, the Best Western Plus is a great budget-friendly option for people wanting to explore Alberta’s most vibrant city. My wife and I just spent two nights here while we experienced the Calgary Folk Festival and it was a great place to stay.
One of the things I love about the Best Western is that you can really find one anywhere. I’ve been to over 200 cities in the last five years and the Best Western pops up more than any other. In fact, even on a road trip when we’re in the “middle of nowhere”, we’ll find a Best Western. It’s a brand you can trust and as usual, this one didn’t disappoint.

Location, Location, Location.
Located on 13th Avenue SW, there’s really no better place to be. You’re basically in-between the bustling downtown core and trendy 17 Ave SW. 17th Ave, also known as the Red Mile, is the place to be. This is where you’ll find hip bars and restaurants, chic shops, and loads of quaint cafes. In the summer, this is a great place to find a patio and sit down for a pint of beer.
In the other direction is the downtown core. This is where all the fancy high-rise buildings are as well as the Bow River pathway, Prince’s Island Park, and a smorgasbord of great restaurants, nightclubs, shopping, and attractions. You’ll also find the C-train just 3 blocks away and Steven’s Avenue, a really cool pedestrian-only street (mostly) where you’ll also find some of the cities best pubs and restaurants. As you can see, the Best Western Plus downtown Calgary is really in a great location for visitors.
We opted for the Queen Spa Suite, which is located on the top (16th) floor with some pretty cool views of the city. We had a full kitchen, a separate living room, a massive balcony, and a huge jacuzzi right next to the extremely comfortable bed. There was also two flat screen TV’s; One in the living room and one in the bedroom. We’ve stayed in a couple of different Best Western Plus hotels and although we loved this one, we did find it a little old-fashioned compared to others. You can certainly tell it’s not a new hotel but it was still very nice and clean, which is what’s important. The room had everything we wanted and being able to soak at the end of a busy day was incredible. It was also convenient to have a kitchen, which saved us money on food.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to use some of the on-site facilities such as the fitness centre and sauna but we did make use of the complimentary Wi-Fi and underground parking. We also read some of the complimentary daily newspapers and when I realized that I forgot my razer at home, I was able to get a free disposable razor at the front desk. The hotel also provides photocopying and faxing for a fee, complimentary local and toll-free calls, on-site coin laundry and dry-cleaning service.
This is the only part of the stay that I wasn’t overly enthusiastic for. It is a hot breakfast, which is a huge step up from the common continental breakfasts normally found at budget-friendly hotels but if you’re a healthy eater (like we are), there wasn’t a lot of options. There’s a waffle machine for making your own waffles as well as instant oatmeal, hard-boiled eggs, toast and bagels, pre-cooked plain omelettes, hash browns, yogurt and sausage. As you can see, there’s a lot to choose from, which is great but we just didn’t find it incredibly tasty or healthy. By the second day, we simply opted for yogurt, a bagel, and a couple pieces of the plain omelettes with ketchup. This breakfast is certainly better than most budget hotels provide and if you’re not a picky eater, you’ll be left more than satisfied.
Overall, our stay at the Best Western Plus in downtown Calgary was great. Our beds were super comfortable, the location was A+, the underground parking was free, the hot breakfast was convenient, the staff were friendly and attentive, and the jacuzzi was superb. We stayed in Calgary to experience the Calgary Folk Festival at Prince’s Island Park and it was nice being able to walk there and not worry about parking during such a busy event.
If you’re visiting Calgary and looking for a budget-friendly hotel in the heart of Calgary, I can definately recommend the Best Western Plus downtown Calgary. Considering their 4-star rating on TripAdvisor and 8.3/10 rating on Booking.com, it looks like many others would agree.
During the Calgary Folk Fest, the Best Western Plus invited us for a complimentary stay. However, my reviews are always 100% honest.
