Silk & Snow Mattress – Finding High-End Comfort at Home

November 5, 2024 By Matthew G. Bailey Leave a Comment

(This is a sponsored article from Silk & Snow.)

Have you ever been to a mid to high-end hotel and had the best sleep of your life? Some of these hotels have mastered the game regarding high-quality mattresses and bedding, creating the most comfortable space for a wonderful sleep. You would think this would be the goal of all hotels, but quite often it’s not. When we find the good ones, however, it makes us realize how important a mattress is and that we should probably up our mattress game at home, both in terms of comfort and style.

Silk and Snow Mattress

This is where the Silk & Snow mattress comes into play. We did all sorts of research trying to find the best bed-in-a-box mattresses in Canada. Gone are the days when you needed to visit a store and get them to deliver a massive king-sized mattress to your house, squeezing it through the many doors and up the stairs. Nowadays, you can get a mattress delivered in a box, allowing you to easily bring it up to your room and assemble it on your own.

There are so many companies offering mattresses like this but after much research, we decided to reach out and try the Organic Mattress by Silk & Snow. Not only did we read an overwhelming amount of positive reviews, but they also sell high-quality furniture to pair with the mattress, making it a one-stop shop for creating a beautiful bedroom.

Our Silk and Snow Mattress

The Silk & Snow Canadian Organic Mattress: Why We Love It

In recent years, more consumers have turned their attention to sustainable, organic products, especially when it comes to everyday essentials like mattresses. Among the brands that have gained attention for their commitment to eco-friendliness, comfort, and quality, Silk & Snow has made a name for itself, particularly with its Canadian-made Organic Mattress. This mattress offers a combination of luxurious comfort, environmentally friendly materials, and thoughtful design that resonates with consumers seeking a more sustainable lifestyle. We weren’t specifically seeking an organic mattress when we began shopping around but once we started learning about them, we wanted to try one out.

Let’s dive into the key features of this mattress and explore why it has become such a popular choice among eco-conscious buyers.

The Rise of Eco-Friendly Mattresses

The global mattress industry has seen a significant shift toward sustainability, and it’s not hard to see why. People are becoming more aware of the impact that synthetic materials and harmful chemicals can have on both the environment and their health. Traditional mattresses often contain materials like polyurethane foam and chemical flame retardants, which can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air and potentially pose health risks over time. Additionally, the production of these materials is energy-intensive and contributes to environmental degradation.

In contrast, organic mattresses like Silk & Snow’s Organic Mattress use natural and renewable resources, making them a healthier and more sustainable option. Since it’s not a heckuva a lot more expensive for the organic mattress over the standard mattresses, we figured it was worth the investment, especially when it comes to something as important as a mattress, which plays a key role in sleep quality and overall well-being.

Silk and Snow Mattress Review

What Makes the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress Special?

While the Silk & Snow Mattress isn’t the only organic mattress on the market, it does excel in many ways. It’s designed with a focus on sustainability, comfort, and high-quality craftsmanship, making it a standout product in the growing world of eco-friendly bedding.

1. Certified Organic Materials

One of the main reasons consumers love the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is because of its GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certifications. These certifications ensure that the materials used in the mattress meet strict environmental and social criteria. The organic cotton and wool are ethically sourced, and the natural latex used in the mattress is harvested from sustainable rubber tree plantations.

  • Organic Cotton: The cover of the mattress is made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, which is not only soft and breathable but also free from harmful chemicals like pesticides and synthetic dyes. This ensures that the mattress remains hypoallergenic, making it a great choice for people with sensitivities or allergies.
  • Organic Wool: Beneath the cotton cover is a layer of organic wool, which acts as a natural flame retardant. This eliminates the need for chemical flame retardants that are commonly used in conventional mattresses. Wool also has moisture-wicking properties, which helps regulate temperature and keep the sleeping surface cool and dry.
  • Natural Latex: The mattress’s core is made from GOLS-certified organic latex, which is derived from the sap of rubber trees. Latex is known for its excellent support, pressure relief, and durability. It is also naturally resistant to dust mites, mold, and mildew, making it a healthier option for people prone to respiratory issues.

2. Exceptional Comfort and Support

Beyond its eco-friendly materials, the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress offers an exceptional level of comfort and support, which is why many customers rave about its sleep quality. The natural latex core provides a medium-firm feel, which is ideal for a wide range of sleepers (the brand also offers options to choose a “firm” or “plush” version, to cater to more sleeping preferences). Latex is known for its resilient yet contouring support, which means it conforms to the body’s natural curves without creating the “sinking” sensation often associated with memory foam.

  • Pressure Relief: Latex offers excellent pressure relief, particularly for key areas like the shoulders, hips, and back. This makes it a great choice for side sleepers who need a mattress that cushions these pressure points while still maintaining proper spinal alignment.
  • Motion Isolation: Couples will appreciate the motion isolation properties of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress. The natural latex absorbs movement, preventing disturbances when one partner shifts or gets out of bed. This feature is particularly important for light sleepers who are easily awakened by their partner’s movements.
  • Temperature Regulation: Thanks to the combination of organic wool and latex, the mattress naturally regulates temperature. Wool’s moisture-wicking properties help keep the mattress cool in the summer and warm in the winter, while latex promotes airflow, preventing heat buildup. This makes it an excellent option for people who tend to overheat at night.

3. Durability and Longevity

Consumers also appreciate the longevity of the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress. Unlike synthetic foam mattresses that may sag or lose support over time, latex is known for its durability and ability to maintain its shape. With proper care, this mattress can last for many years, making it a great investment for those who want a product that stands the test of time. Silk & Snow also offers a generous 15-year warranty, providing peace of mind to customers.

4. Ethical and Sustainable Manufacturing

Another reason why people love the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is the company’s commitment to ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices. The mattress is made in Canada, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship and reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance shipping. Additionally, Silk & Snow only partners with suppliers who adhere to fair labour practices and environmentally responsible production methods.

By choosing organic and sustainably sourced materials, Silk & Snow is helping to reduce the environmental impact of the mattress industry. The use of natural latex, wool, and cotton not only minimizes the reliance on petroleum-based products but also supports the preservation of ecosystems where these resources are harvested.

5. Health Benefits

Many consumers are drawn to the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress because of the health benefits associated with its natural materials. Conventional mattresses made with synthetic foams and chemical additives can off-gas, releasing VOCs into the air. This can contribute to indoor air pollution and may lead to health issues like headaches, allergies, or respiratory problems.

In contrast, the certified organic materials used in Silk & Snow’s mattress are free from harmful chemicals, making it a healthier choice for you and your family. The natural latex is hypoallergenic, dust mite-resistant, and antimicrobial, which helps create a cleaner sleep environment. For individuals with chemical sensitivities or allergies, this mattress can offer significant relief and contribute to better overall health.

Why We Love the Silk & Snow Organic Mattress

First and foremost, we love Silk & Snow’s Organic Mattress because it’s super comfortable, reminding us of the lovely hotels we’ve stayed in over the years. As mentioned above, we weren’t planning on buying an organic mattress, but after learning about the features, we decided to give it a go. However, all of their mattresses have rave reviews.

There are some features we love though when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep.

  • Zoned Support: A combination of soft coils on the outer thirds and firmer coils on the middle third delivers a balanced support system that promotes spinal alignment
  • Pocket Coil Base: Dense pocketed spring coils provide unparalleled support and limit motion transfer
  • Firm Edge Support: Extra firm perimeter prevents sinking when sitting on the edge, and reinforces the structure
  • Handles: Reinforced side handles make rotation and adjustment effortless, and long-term support a breeze

Buying Your Entire Bedroom Set from Silk & Snow

As much as we love our Organic Mattress, another reason we decided on Silk & Snow is because of the beautiful furniture they offer, including bed frames, nightstands, dressers, and more. This makes it easy to design a beautiful bedroom and with everything shipped to your door, there’s no need to visit a store or borrow a truck.

This is everything we ordered.

Plush Organic Mattress

This entire article was dedicated to the organic mattress, so there’s no reason to talk about it more. It has been super comfortable for us, combining GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic cotton, GOTS-certified wool, and durable pocketed spring coils.

Muslin Coverlet

Made in Portugal from 100% cotton, this gentle, lightweight muslin features a soft, textured feel.

Flax Linen Top Sheets, Fitted Sheets and Pillowcases

We highly recommend purchasing your sheets from Silk & Snow as well. In our experience, the flax linen sheets, which are made with 100% European flax, look great and help with a comfortable sleep.

All Season Down Alt Duvet

We love a good duvet, especially during the winter months when it gets very cold outside. The All Season Down Alt Duvets from Silk and Snow offer an ultra-soft outer shell with a plush down-alternative microfibre fill to keep you cozy and comfortable during the night. It also features a 100% cotton exterior for improved breathability, multiple weight options for the perfect level of warmth and comfort, hypoallergenic fill with zero animal products, and built-in corner loops to limit movement of the duvet insert

Flax Linen Duvet Cover

Don’t forget a duvet cover while you’re at it! This duvet cover is also made with 100% European and features corner ties to limit the movement of the duvet inside.

Flax Linen Sham Set

Also made with 100% European flax in Portugal, the flax linen sham set features an envelope enclosure to keep your pillows tucked in and out of sight.

Mattress Protector

Also a necessity in our opinion, this waterproof mattress protector keeps your mattress protected against dirt, bacteria, spills, and normal wear and tears. It’s also machine washable and is built with a
multi-layer moisture-wicking technology that helps to keep you cool at night and maintain breathability.

Reserve Down Pillow

In addition to a great mattress, pillows are also key to having a good sleep. The reserve down pillows from Silk & Snow are made using pure white duck down, showcasing the luxuriously plush feel that has made natural down one of the most prized materials in bedding. They feature 600 fill power and a soft, 300-thread count sateen cotton cover.

Silk and Snow Rattan Headboard

Rattan Bed Frame

The most striking piece of furniture we acquired is the Rattan Bed Frame, a natural, sustainable bed frame made of blonde rubberwood, which is prized for its sustainability and durability. Combining traditional Japanese joinery with timeless styling, this frame is incredibly beautiful and easy to build.

We also chose the Rattan Headboard, handwoven from natural cane rattan to bring a boho style into our master bedroom. We’ve already received many compliments from friends and family.

Handmade in Vietnam from locally sourced rubberwood, variances in colour and grain can be expected, which makes every piece a little unique.

Rattan 2-drawer Nightstand

In addition to the bed frame, it’s worthwhile completing the set, which is why we also opted for the Rattan 2-drawer Nightstand, which is also made with solid rubberwood and natural cane rattan to complete the relaxed aesthetic we were trying to achieve in the bedroom. They come pre-made, so the only thing you need to do is install with legs. Single-drawer nightstands are also available if you’d like an area where you can see books or other items.

Conclusion and 30 Days of Use

After coming from a fairly firm Endy memory foam mattress, both my wife and I can already notice a positive difference in our neck, back, and shoulders after 30m days of sleeping on the mattress. The coil base combined with the plush pillowtop of the Organic Plush Mattress offers the perfect balance of firmness, helping us to feel much less achy in the morning, even though we often sleep with our babies sandwiched in between us. We’ve tried some other hybrid beds in the past as well, but this one is relatively firm and holds its shape versus cocooning you. We don’t feel like we’re sinking and when the other person moves, we don’t feel it.

It has only been 30 days but so far we love it. However, if something were to change, Silk & Snow offer a whopping 365-night trial, so you really know if the mattress is for you. How amazing is that?

To complete our review, here’s a quick list of the pros and cons of the Silk & Snow organic plush mattress:

Pros

  • Ready to use when unwrapped
  • Reinforced handles make moving and flipping easy
  • Pocket coils provide added support
  • Increased edge support
  • Free shipping and returns
  • 15-year warranty
  • 365-night trial
  • We reviewed the plush version but there is also firm and medium-firm.
  • GOLS, GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Eco-Institut certifications
  • No weight limit for the mattress

Cons

  • At roughly 120 lbs, the mattress is very heavy. Even though it comes in a box, it took three adults to carry it up the stairs as it can be hard to grip the box.
  • We’ve noticed that the mattress doesn’t;t seem to cover the Rattan bed frame from corner to corner. However, you can’t see it because of the sheets and perhaps it was designed that way.
  • A firm latex layer may not appeal to those who want to sink into their mattress

That’s it. Have you tried Silk & Snow? What do you think?
