Things to Do in Saint John, New Brunswick

By Matthew G. Bailey Leave a Comment

Saint John is the oldest incorporated city in Canada.
Port of Saint John.

As one of New Brunswick’s biggest cities and a major port and industrial centre, Saint John has a lot to offer and is also a great base for exploring other parts of the province, such as Fundy Trail Parkway.

Not to be confused with St. John’s, Newfoundland (which is actually known as the oldest English-founded city in North America), Saint John was founded in 1783 by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution and is the oldest incorporated city in Canada. This deep history has resulted in a really beautiful and historic downtown centre that has many beautiful brick buildings that were built after the catastrophic fire of 1877.

The city basically sits where the Saint John River enters the Bay of Fundy, which has also led to the creation of one of its most popular natural attractions. This natural phenomenon is called Reversing Falls, which is caused by the collision of the Bay of Fundy and the Saint John River, creating a series of rapids and whirlpools.

However, there’s much more to the city than historic brick buildings and the Reversing Falls, so in this travel guide to the best things to do in Saint John, we’ll fill you in on what not to miss during your next visit to this historic Atlantic Canadian city.

Fundy Trail Parkway and the amazing shades of green.
One of the many spectacular views along the Fundy Trail Parkway.

Located in Southern New Brunswick, the Fundy Trail Parkway is a 2,559-hectare park that features an unbelievably beautiful 30-kilometre (19 miles) drive that hugs the coastline of the Bay of Fundy. Taking more than two decades to fully complete, this drive is now one of the best road trips in Canada, offering stunning views of the Bay of Fundy, an array of hiking and biking trails, beautiful waterfalls, three lovely beaches, more than 20 gorgeous lookout points, a 60-metre suspension bridge, a massive canyon, and more than 600-million-year-old rock formations. The Fundy Trail Parkway is also part of the UNESCO Fundy Biosphere Reserve, Stonehammer Geopark and the Trans Canada Trail.

It truly is a gorgeous place for a road trip, so if you’re keen on visiting New Brunswick, continue on to learn more about this popular attraction.

The Ultimate Kootenays BC Road Trip

By Matthew G. Bailey Leave a Comment

Canoeing in Fernie BC
Canoeing is just one of the many activities you can do on a Kootenays BC Road Trip.

Imagine driving through the Canadian Rocky Mountains, passing numerous small mountain towns along the way, while enjoying delicious food, golfing, rafting, museums, mining tours, spas, and hot springs. This is what a Kootenays BC Road Trip is all about!

Starting in Fernie and moving up Highway 93 to Radium Hot Springs and Kootenay National Park, this is truly one of the top road trips in Canada. The landscapes are unreal, the towns are stunning, and there are activities and attractions for everyone, including golfing, adventure travel, or just kicking back while enjoying a massage.

While the optimum time to see the Kootenays is at least one week (two is better), you can also pick and choose where you want to go based on what you want to do or see. The driving time between all the towns is actually quite short, which makes it easy to navigate.

Having just experienced a 10-day Kootenay BC road trip, we’re going to list out what we did to help you plan your own. In addition, we have travel guides on some of the many destinations in the Kootenays to further enhance your trip.

Things to Do in Vernon

By Matthew G. Bailey Leave a Comment

One of the top things to do in Vernon is hiking the Grey Canal Trail for amazing views of the area.
Turtle Mountain is an easy way to get jaw-dropping views of Vernon.

Located at the north end of British Columbia’s stunning Okanagan Valley, Vernon is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the province, including many lakes, mountains, and farmland. This makes Vernon a great place for outdoor adventure.

Smaller than Kelowna, which is located further south, Vernon is also a great place to enjoy the Okanagan without as much hustle and bustle. You can rest and relax while golfing, bike or hike the many trails, or strap yourself into a kayak and paddle across the scenic lakes.

The population of Greater Vernon is just over 60,000 and like the rest of the Okanagan Valley, Vernon has a semi-arid climate with very hot dry summers and mild winters. If you’re looking for a lush green look, you might want to come in the spring before the sun turns everything yellow. However, the summer is when the city really comes to life with lots of tourists and locals enjoying that summer heat.

Whether you’re a local looking for new things to do or you’re visiting Vernon for the first time, below are the top things to do in Vernon!

Canada’s Most Luxurious Rocky Mountain Train

By Matthew G. Bailey 4 Comments

The best Rocky Mountain Train is the Rocky Mountaineer.

Few places rival the beauty of Canada’s Rocky Mountains. With majestic towns like Banff and Jasper, stunning turquoise lakes and rivers, and tall glistening mountain peaks, they attract millions of visitors each and every year. But that’s only one small slice of the incredible landscapes between Vancouver and Calgary. There are also the Columbia Mountains, the Coast Mountains, the semi-desert landscapes around Kamloops, and the coastline of British Columbia’s Pacific Coast. It makes for one heckuva a Canadian road trip, but what if you could see it all from the comfort of a Rocky Mountain train?

Things to Do in London Ontario

By Maureen Spencer 1 Comment

London, Ontario has quite a few things in common with that other London over on the other side of the world in the United Kingdom. There’s a Thames River and a Covent Garden, but Ontario’s London also has its own unique set of attractions to make it an interesting place to visit in its own right.

Located in southwestern Ontario, London is about halfway between Toronto, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan, just north of Lake Erie and the US border. It is also known as the “Forest City” as it was once a thick forest, which is still quite evident with the many woodlands, parks, and greenways along the Thames River.

Home to the University of Western Ontario, it’s also known as a “university city” with many students living here. It has some of Ontario’s oldest buildings and there are plenty of eateries, cultural centres and outdoor activities to keep you busy.

In this Ontario travel guide, we’ll share with you the top things to do in London, Ontario, including where to eat and drink.
