Best Canadian Travel Blog

Rocky Mountaineer Rocky Mountain Train
Arriving at Banff National Park via the Rocky Mountaineer.

2022 was a big year for Must Do Canada. We travelled across the country making videos about incredible experiences, went to our first travel conference, had our best year in terms of income, and won the TMAC Travel Media Award at the TIAC Canadian Tourism Awards, which was a great way to end the year and solidify our position as having the best Canadian travel blog.

For those unfamiliar with those organizations, TIAC stands for Tourism Industry Association of Canada and TMAC stands for Travel Media Association of Canada. TIAC essentially represents Canada’s tourism industry and acts as their voice to the Canadian government whereas TMAC is the voice of the travel media, such as us. In 2022, however, both formed a partnership to bridge the gap between industry and media. As part of this new partnership, TMAC set up the Travel Media Award, a new award that would be given out at the 2022 Canadian Tourism Awards in Ottawa, Canada.

Things to Do in Whitehorse

December 13, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey 3 Comments

Things to Do in Whitehorse Yukon Canada.
Whitehorse, Yukon.

Located between Alaska and Canada’s Northwest Territories, Whitehorse is the capital city of the Yukon and the largest city in Northern Canada. Although the city is now home to more than 28,000 people and serves as a major hub for Canada’s north, it owes its existence to the Klondike Gold Rush, which started way back in 1897.

There weren’t any proper highways back then either. Gold prospectors had to traverse the difficult and sometimes deadly journey over White Pass from Skagway, Alaska while negotiating the Miles Canyon and Whitehorse rapids before finally descending the Yukon River in hopes of striking it rich. With so much activity, a small settlement grew next to the river, and due to the foaming waters of the mighty rapids that looked like white steeds, the settlement became known as Whitehorse. Although the rush of it all is long over, there are still gold mining operations in the area and you too can pan for gold as part of the experience.

I’ve been to Whitehorse a few times, starting back in the 90s when I was just a child visiting my uncle on a road trip with my parents, and most notably, in 2017 when my wife and I embarked on a 150-day road trip across Canada. If you ever have the chance to make it this far north, I highly recommend it. There are so many cool things to do in Yukon and Whitehorse is where it all starts.

Things to Do in Saint John, New Brunswick

August 16, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey 3 Comments

Saint John is the oldest incorporated city in Canada.
Port of Saint John.

As one of New Brunswick’s biggest cities and a major port and industrial centre, Saint John has a lot to offer and is also a great base for exploring other parts of the province, such as Fundy Trail Parkway.

Not to be confused with St. John’s, Newfoundland (which is actually known as the oldest English-founded city in North America), Saint John was founded in 1783 by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution and is the oldest incorporated city in Canada. This deep history has resulted in a really beautiful and historic downtown centre that has many beautiful brick buildings that were built after the catastrophic fire of 1877.

The city basically sits where the Saint John River enters the Bay of Fundy, which has also led to the creation of one of its most popular natural attractions. This natural phenomenon is called Reversing Falls, which is caused by the collision of the Bay of Fundy and the Saint John River, creating a series of rapids and whirlpools.

However, there’s much more to the city than historic brick buildings and the Reversing Falls, so in this travel guide to the best things to do in Saint John, we’ll fill you in on what not to miss during your next visit to this historic Atlantic Canadian city.

The Fundy Trail Parkway is also part of the UNESCO Fundy Biosphere Reserve, Stonehammer Geopark and the Trans Canada Trail.

It truly is a gorgeous place for a road trip, so if you’re keen on visiting New Brunswick, continue on to learn more about this popular attraction.
