December 20, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey Leave a Comment

As part of our Manitoba facts article, we talk about the flag of Manitoba.

Located in the middle of Canada and full of history, wildlife, and unique attractions, there are a lot of interesting Manitoba facts to learn about. From being known as the polar bear capital of the world and the Slurpee capital of the world to having some of the largest festivals in Canada, it’s really fascinating to dig deep into the many facts about Manitoba.

Although we’ve spent much of our life in Alberta, we did live in Winnipeg for five months back in 2015 and really loved it. We’ve also travelled quite extensively around Manitoba, including many visits to Winnipeg, Churchill, and Riding Mountain National Park.

So without further ado, here are 84 facts about Manitoba.

Things to Do in Whitehorse

December 13, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey 3 Comments

Things to Do in Whitehorse Yukon Canada.
Whitehorse, Yukon.

Located between Alaska and Canada’s Northwest Territories, Whitehorse is the capital city of the Yukon and the largest city in Northern Canada. Although the city is now home to more than 28,000 people and serves as a major hub for Canada’s north, it owes its existence to the Klondike Gold Rush, which started way back in 1897.

There weren’t any proper highways back then either. Gold prospectors had to traverse the difficult and sometimes deadly journey over White Pass from Skagway, Alaska while negotiating the Miles Canyon and Whitehorse rapids before finally descending the Yukon River in hopes of striking it rich. With so much activity, a small settlement grew next to the river, and due to the foaming waters of the mighty rapids that looked like white steeds, the settlement became known as Whitehorse. Although the rush of it all is long over, there are still gold mining operations in the area and you too can pan for gold as part of the experience.

I’ve been to Whitehorse a few times, starting back in the 90s when I was just a child visiting my uncle on a road trip with my parents, and most notably, in 2017 when my wife and I embarked on a 150-day road trip across Canada. If you ever have the chance to make it this far north, I highly recommend it. There are so many cool things to do in Yukon and Whitehorse is where it all starts.

Tatamagouche is one of the many Nova Scotia breweries you don’t want to miss.

Nova Scotia is home to more than 70 breweries province-wide and as a result, it has made beer enthusiasts out of people who never thought they would be. With a diverse range of ingredients, flavours, and beer types, there’s truly something for even the most discerning palette.

Nova Scotia breweries make some of the best beers in the country. Is it the locally sourced ingredients, the salty sea air, or the tangible passion of the brewers? Who knows, but beer enthusiasts are certainly paying attention.

Here are a few of my favourite Nova Scotia breweries that you might want to add to your bucket list the next time you visit our beautiful province.

Hiking Gros Morne Mountain is one of the top things to do in Newfoundland.
When it comes to geology, Gros Morne National Park is the best place to find interesting Newfoundland facts.

There are so many cool, fun, and interesting Newfoundland facts and it’s easily one of my favourite destinations in Canada. After all, my father is from there, and so I spent almost every summer travelling from Alberta to Newfoundland to visit family. But excluding family, it still stands out as one of my favourite places in the country. The scenery is beautiful, there’s so much outdoor adventure, the people are truly the salt of the Earth, and it really feels like it has a unique culture compared to the rest of Canada, with delicious food, east coast music, and so much more.

Whether you fly to the island or take the ferry to Newfoundland, you will have a great time. The people are super friendly and it’s very easy to travel around. Just make sure you rent a car! You can explore the oldest English-founded city in North America, hike beautiful Gros Morne National Park, go on a whale-watching tour, and so much more.

However, aside from all the fun things to do in Newfoundland, there are lots of interesting Newfoundland facts as well, so I hope you learn a lot about this unique Atlantic Canada province below.

32 of the Best Things to Do in Saskatchewan

October 18, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey 42 Comments

Grasslands National Park is one of the best things to do in Saskatchewan.
Embracing the beauty of Grasslands National Park in Southern Saskatchewan.

Last Updated: October 18th, 2022

One of only two landlocked provinces in Canada, Saskatchewan is widely known for its flat prairie landscapes, but it’s also home to chiselled badlands, thick boreal forests, sand dunes, and thousands of lakes. It’s very much an “outdoor” province as it doesn’t have any major metropolitan centres. However, it does have some cool cities and towns, including Saskatoon, which has one of the youngest demographics in Canada.

Located on the Western side of Canada, east of Alberta, Saskatchewan is often overlooked during a cross-Canada road trip. But that’s a big mistake. After exploring Saskatchewan a lot during the last five years, it’s become one of our favourites, thanks in part to the incredible landscapes of Grasslands National Park, the bustling food scene of Saskatoon, and the beautiful lakes such as Waskesiu in Prince Albert National Park. You’ll even find old tunnels below the town of Moose Jaw that were used by Al Capone back in the prohibition days, fascinating indigenous culture, and sand dunes in the north that look like something you’d find in Saudi Arabia. Those looking for outdoor adventure away from the crowds, or a cool, hip small city scene will love exploring Saskatchewan.

Whether you’re planning to explore the cities, the badlands, or everything in between, we’ve got you covered in this comprehensive travel guide to the many things to do in Saskatchewan!

Canoeing in Canada: The Canadian Canoe Route Road Trip

September 6, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey Leave a Comment

Canoeing in Canada at OWL Rafting, Ontario.
Canoeing in Canada at sunset near OWL Rafting, Ontario.

The Canadian Canoe has become one of Canada’s most recognized icons. Invented by the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, canoeing in Canada became a tool of diplomacy and cross-cultural collaboration that made the creation of this country possible. Without the canoe, there may not be a “Canada”. After all, how else would the Europeans have explored such a vast and wild country full of rivers and lakes? How else would the voyageurs have travelled across the country trading furs and other goods?

While no longer a major mode of transportation, canoeing still serves as a popular pastime for exploring the vastness of Canada’s rivers and lakes, connecting Canadians to wild places while rewarding determination and hard work.

Now, with the Canadian Canoe Route, you can combine canoeing in Canada and a fun Ontario road trip that connects you with Canada’s past and present on a network of waterways and roads between Toronto and Ottawa. You’ll gain insight into the true “wonder” of the canoe with a hands-on experience that takes place on land and on the water. You’ll learn about the history of Canada and the canoe while also being immersed in nature by paddling your own canoe in flat water and/or whitewater, whitewater rafting, and exploring the Canadian Shield of the Ontario Highlands while enjoying many Canadian Signature Experiences.

The Ultimate Guide to Camping in Nordegg and Abraham Lake

August 30, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey 2 Comments

Preachers Point Abraham Lake Alberta
These are just some of the sights you’ll enjoy while camping in Nordegg and Abraham Lake.

Few people have explored Nordegg and the David Thompson region as much as we have. Every year, we find ourselves back in this mountain paradise to experience more adventure, whether that’s a gentle float down the North Saskatchewan River or an adrenaline-pumping climb up the steepest Via Ferrata in the province.

We know Nordegg very well and that’s because we love it so much. Sandwiched in-between famous destinations like Banff and Jasper, Nordegg and David Thompson Country offer similar mountain adventures with much, much, much fewer crowds.

However, despite the lack of crowds, there aren’t a lot of accommodation options in Nordegg. There are some lovely Nordegg cabins, such as Expanse Cottages and Nature’s Getaway, and there are hotels in nearby Rocky Mountain House, but when it comes to the rugged expanse of David Thompson Country, there are not many places to rest your head.

This is where camping in Nordegg and the surrounding region come in handy. Whether you have a tent or an RV, there are both paid and almost-free options for Nordegg camping. In this guide to camping in Nordegg, we’ll fill you in on all the possibilities.

Things to Do in Saint John, New Brunswick

August 16, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey 3 Comments

Saint John is the oldest incorporated city in Canada.
Port of Saint John.

As one of New Brunswick’s biggest cities and a major port and industrial centre, Saint John has a lot to offer and is also a great base for exploring other parts of the province, such as Fundy Trail Parkway.

Not to be confused with St. John’s, Newfoundland (which is actually known as the oldest English-founded city in North America), Saint John was founded in 1783 by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution and is the oldest incorporated city in Canada. This deep history has resulted in a really beautiful and historic downtown centre that has many beautiful brick buildings that were built after the catastrophic fire of 1877.

The city basically sits where the Saint John River enters the Bay of Fundy, which has also led to the creation of one of its most popular natural attractions. This natural phenomenon is called Reversing Falls, which is caused by the collision of the Bay of Fundy and the Saint John River, creating a series of rapids and whirlpools.

However, there’s much more to the city than historic brick buildings and the Reversing Falls, so in this travel guide to the best things to do in Saint John, we’ll fill you in on what not to miss during your next visit to this historic Atlantic Canadian city.

Your Guide to Planning a Road Trip

August 9, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey 209 Comments

One of the best parts about planning a road trip is deciding where to go.
The Fundy Trail Parkway is one of the best road trips in Canada.

If there’s anything we’re known for here at Must Do Canada, it’s probably road trips. From the Icefields Parkway to the Dempster Highway, we’ve been on many of the best road trips in Canada, not to mention all the road trips we’ve done in the USA, Mexico, Australia, and beyond.

For short road trips, we tend to just jump in the vehicle without thinking too much about it. We pack what we need, of course, but we don’t always plan for the potential setbacks that could happen, such as a flat tire or something else.

But just like travel insurance, it’s good to be prepared, especially for longer adventurous road trips.

So, in this guide to planning a road trip, which is sponsored by MotoMaster, SIMONIZ, Reflex and Bluehive, exclusive brands found at Canadian Tire, we’re going to cover everything you need to prepare for a road trip, including vehicle safety tips, vehicle accessories, road trip essentials, and more.

Starting in Fernie and moving up Highway 93 to Radium Hot Springs and Kootenay National Park, this is truly one of the top road trips in Canada. The landscapes are unreal, the towns are stunning, and there are activities and attractions for everyone, including golfing, adventure travel, or just kicking back while enjoying a massage.

While the optimum time to see the Kootenays is at least one week (two is better), you can also pick and choose where you want to go based on what you want to do or see. The driving time between all the towns is actually quite short, which makes it easy to navigate.

Having just experienced a 10-day Kootenay BC road trip, we’re going to list out what we did to help you plan your own. In addition, we have travel guides on some of the many destinations in the Kootenays to further enhance your trip.
