The Kananaskis is one of the best romantic getaways in Alberta.

When it comes to romantic getaways in Alberta, there’s certainly no shortage of options. With the Rocky Mountains in the west, the Alberta Badlands in the east, the prairies and foothills in the south, and the boreal forest in the North, Alberta offers some of the most varied landscapes in Canada.

In this Alberta travel guide, we’ll share some of the best romantic getaways in Alberta.

Mount Engadine is a popular choice for romantic getaways in Alberta.

Mount Engadine Lodge, Kananaskis

Located in the heart of the Kananaskis, Mount Engadine Lodge is about as wild as you can get while still having the comforts of a lodge. It’s only 40 minutes from Canmore and just over two hours from Calgary but provides a wonderful setting and one of the top romantic getaways in Alberta. We just spent a night here and had a great time. They offer four types of accommodation, including the lodge itself, cabins, glamping tents, and even a Yurt for those looking for a more rustic experience. Included in your stay are all of your meals, which include breakfast, a packed lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, as well as some drinks such as coffee and tea. They also include snowshoe rentals and can provide fat-tire bikes for an extra fee. We opted for the glamping tents, which have a fireplace and a private bathroom. The lodge is located within a provincial park and is right in front of a beautiful meadow, which is perfect for snowshoeing in the winter months. However, this lodge is great during all the seasons of the year. In the summer, it makes a great base to explore some of the best hikes in Kananaskis Country.

Kananaskis Mountain Lodge

Another fancy option for staying in the Kananaskis is the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. Located right next to Nakiska Ski Resort, it’s not as secluded as Mount Engadine but does offer the convenience of downhill skiing at Nakiska and more amenities. This is a huge property with on-site dining and a 50,000 sq ft. Nordic Spa featuring steam and sauna cabins, outdoor pools, heated hammocks, and even a yoga studio.

Things to do in lake louise, Alberta.

Post Hotel & Spa Lake Louise

Originally built in 1942, The Post Hotel resonates with the spirit of its colourful founder, Sir Norman Watson – and the dedication of its current owners. Located in the village of Lake Louise, the Post Hotel & Spa is a great romantic getaway option for relaxation but also for exploring the Canadian Rockies. Now a proclaimed Relais & Chateaux property, The Post offers various accommodations from traditional suites to cabins and family lodges, all the way to a private 3,000 sq. ft. mountain lodge perched on the banks of the Pipestone River. The property offers world-class dining options, a 25,500 bottle wine cellar of the finest wines available, a spa with services to accommodate every guest’s needs and various activities including biking, guided hikes, fishing, rock climbing, skiing, sleigh rides, dog sledding and more.

Lake Louise Inn

Lake Louise Inn is also one of the top romantic getaways in Alberta. The hotel offers stunning views of the Canadian Rockies and brings the best of Banff National Park right to guests’ doorsteps. Located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake Louise is renowned for its natural beauty and abundance of activities. It’s a haven for winter sports enthusiasts with snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding and cross country skiing in one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth. Inside the Lake Louise Inn, you will find plenty of places to refuel with your partner after an active day together. Lovingly maintained, the Lake Louise Inn offers a wide range of guest rooms and suites to suit any style and budget for your Rocky Mountain getaway. Share quality time and unwind in the heated indoor pool and whirlpools, while taking in the sweeping mountain views through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Fairmont Banff Springs

While Banff is always one of the best romantic getaways in Alberta regardless of where you stay, there’s no place more iconic than the 132-year-old Fairmont Banff Springs. Also known as the Banff Castle, that’s just what this place looks like. In fact, it’s a Banff attraction in and of itself. For those of you who have experienced the Fairmont brand, you know it’s all about luxury and history. This historic hotel is surrounded by lush forest and the Rocky Mountains but is also the most historic hotel in Banff. They also have their own hot springs and are within walking distance from beautiful Bow Falls. They also have a number of on-site restaurants, a luxurious spa, a pool, and make one of the best Earl Grey teas we’ve ever had. It’s certainly on the pricier side, but if you’re after a luxurious place for a special getaway, it’s hard to beat.

They’ve also added some cool new features such as an outdoor private dining experience in the intimate360° Dome and an in-suite five-course dinner and indulgent brunch to enjoy in the comfort of your guest room.

Willow Ridge Cottage

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway super close to Calgary, it’s hard to beat the Willow Ridge Cottage, which is just 5 minutes south of Cochrane. This place is also pet-friendly if you’re looking to bring your fur babies, but either way, it’s a wonderful place for admiring the wide-open skies and the gorgeous valley while enjoying the toasty warmth of a campfire. When it’s time to hit the bed, you’ll still get to enjoy the stars thanks to the skylight over the bed.

What makes this place extra unique though is the on-site activities, such as collecting your own eggs for breakfast, visiting the beehives, or exploring the ranch by horseback. There’s also plenty of hiking opportunities and It’s also a great winter getaway as you can go snowshoeing or ice skating on the pond.

Plus, when you want to get out into town, Cochrane is a wonderful place to visit with historic buildings, delicious restaurants, and the popular Half Hitch Brewing Company.

Sylvan Lake Aberta - a great day trip from Calgary

Lakeside Accommodation in Sylvan Lake

Alberta doesn’t have a lot of lakes but if you’re looking for one that’s great for a romantic getaway, Sylvan Lake is a good option. Perhaps one of the most popular lakes in Alberta, Sylvan Lake is a huge lake that’s popular with watersports, fishing, or just enjoying the sunsets.

Sure you could stay at a hotel but why do that when you can rent a lakeside cabin or house, or rent a place walking distance to the beach. We’ve seen so many options on VRBO so we decided to write this about the general area. Imagine having a backyard right on the lake with a romantic fire pit and lounge chairs to admire the stars. Rent some kayaks or a boat and enjoy water access right from your accommodation.

The Village at Pigeon Lake

If you’re looking for a great lake to visit that’s just one hour south of Edmonton, Pigeon Lake is the place to go! This cute little town has many boutique shops, as well as restaurants and spas. One of the popular places to enjoy a romantic getaway is the Village Creek Country Inn, which offers lakeside vibes, an on-site wellness spa, a guest terrace and hot tub, and a great location for enjoying many nature trails or golfing at the nearby courses.

Guests can rent a bicycle or take a relaxing stroll around the garden and Pigeon Lake Provincial Park is a 10-minute drive from Village Creek Country Inn.

Restored Loghouse in Strathcona

Looking for a romantic getaway near Edmonton and Elk Island National Park? For something unique that is just a 35-minute drive from Edmonton, stay in a resorted loghouse in Strathcona Country. This is a real heritage opportunity with a chance to experience an early pioneer home without sacrificing modern amenities. Although the original character of the loghouse is maintained, newer additions have included a full kitchen, heated floors, bathroom and laundry facilities. In addition to the loghouse, the property also features many historical items including an old bunkhouse, a Swiss-style log barn, antique farm machinery and an old boat once used for a tourist camp on Cooking Lake in the 1930s.

There are loads of trails throughout the property and it’s a wildlife preserve! Located on the shores of Hastings Lake, there is access for canoe and kayak enthusiasts and adventurers will find many islands during a day of paddling. Our property also boasts a 70-acre Ducks Unlimited Conservation Area. If you are a bird-watching enthusiast or just looking to enjoy nature, this is the place for you.
