Cabins in Alberta: Rocky Mountain Region
Alberta’s crown jewel when it comes to tourism is the Rocky Mountains. Home to world-famous destinations like Banff and Jasper, this slice of the Canadian Rockies receives millions of visitors every year. When it comes to where to stay in Banff or the best Jasper accommodations, you’ll find everything from luxury hotels to hostels, but there’s also a fair amount of cabins to rent as well.
Cabin in Banff National Park
Banff National Park is the most visited national park in Canada. It’s home to the world-famous town of Banff and Lake Louise, as well as some incredible ski resorts, hiking trails, lakes, and more. It’s a great place to find some beautiful cabin rentals in Alberta.
Shadow Lake Lodge
If you’re up for an adventure and budget is no issue, there’s perhaps no greater adventure cabin than Shadow Lake Lodge. Located in the backcountry of Banff National Park, you need to hike about 5 hours one way to make it here. Now, if that’s not an adventure, I don’t know what is. The only caveat is that this place is quite expensive. As a couple, you’re looking at roughly $800 for the night. However, gourmet meals are included and there’s no traffic, phone service, or WiFi.

Storm Mountain Lodge
Located about halfway between Banff and Lake Louise on the highway to Radium Hot Springs, Storm Mountain Lodge offers a beautiful and historic cabin experience. Constructed way back in 1922, this was one of eight Bungalow Camps built by the Canadian Pacific Railway to promote tourism. Oh, if only they could see the park now! Today, those looking to stay in the cabins will find a beautiful room, a tranquil location, and on-site gourmet dining.

Juniper Hotel Cabins
Located right at the edge of the town of Banff, the cabins at Juniper Hotel offer both the beauty of a cabin in the forest with the convenience of being within walking distance of the townsite. Juniper Hotel offers a range of accommodation offers, one of which is their Woodland Cabins, which include a full kitchen and a living area with a fireplace.

Tunnel Mountain Resort
Located within the town of Banff and next to the popular Tunnel Mountain hiking trail, this resort offers a number of accommodation options, including a mountain cottage. Think of it as your own cabin with the convenience of a resort. This chalet features a master bedroom, an upstairs loft, fireplace, private entrance and a balcony or patio.

Johnston Canyon Lodge & Bungalows
Located between Banff and Lake Louise is one of my favourite easy hikes. Johnston Canyon is a beautiful canyon with multiple waterfalls and is very popular to see in both the summer and in the winter. The lodge and the trail are located on the Bow Valley Parkway, which is currently closed to vehicle traffic (you need to hike or walk there). However, if you stay at the lodge, you get the bonus of being able to drive there! Take advantage of the fewer crowds and enjoy the splendour of staying in Johnston Canyon at these cute little Banff cabins.

Paradise Lodge at Lake Louise
Located just 1 km from Lake Louise, Paradise Lodge and Bungalows offers spacious lodge rooms and fully equipped cabins. The property is surrounded by gardens which include a barbecue and a playground. Select rooms offer kitchen facilities and balconies with mountain views.

Baker Creek by Basecamp
This resort offers both lodge-style rooms and cabins. The cabins vary in size but include a kitchenette, wood-burning fireplace, bathroom, and deck. Some even have jacuzzies while others are pet-friendly. They also have a massive fitness centre (better than any other hotel we’ve stayed in) as well as a steam room, sauna, and pool. In 2023, they are also bringing in hot tubs and opening a new restaurant.
Baker Creek by Basecamp is located just off the Bow Valley Parkway between Johnston Canyon and Lake Louise, so it definitely offers some isolation, while remaining close to some amazing natural attractions.

Hi Rampart Creek Hostel
Located on the stunning Icefields Parkway from Banff to Jasper, this is one of the only places you can stay. It is a hostel, however, which means the rooms are shared, but if you’re travelling solo, with a group, or just want to stay in this incredible slice of Banff National Park, the HI Rampart Creek Hostel is a great option. The hostel features a common kitchen, wooden furnishings, shared bathroom facilities, fresh linen, and an outdoor fire pit. Please keep in mind that there is no electricity.

Cabins in Jasper National Park
Equally as beautiful as Banff but with fewer crowds, Jasper is an incredible place to witness the beauty of the Canadian Rockies and to score some of the best cabin rentals in Alberta. Not only is the town and the area full of spectacular sights, but it’s also at the north end of the Icefields Parkway, giving you a great reason to do the world-famous road trip from Banff to Jasper.
Becker’s Chalets
Whenever we visit Jasper, we always stay at Becker’s Chalets. Some of them are a little outdated in the inside, but we love the location. Located just 10 minutes outside of Jasper, they’re right in front of the beautiful Athabasca River and they have a big open area that attracts animals like Elk and Canadian Geese. They also have a playground for kids and a popular restaurant. This is a great place to get away from it all while having your own kitchen and multiple rooms for family outings.
Tekarra Lodge
For a slice of the wild with some luxurious amenities, the Tekarra Lodge is a great option, located in the forest and overlooking the rivers of Jasper National Park. It’s like having your own cabin but with the benefits of a resort, such as a gourmet restaurant, fitness boot camps, shows for children, bikes, and much more. Local hardwoods and stones are used in the building of the Tekarra Lodge cabins and rooms. Each cabin also features a stone fireplace and a balcony.

Jasper East Cabins
Nestled next to iconic Folding Mountain, the Jasper East Cabins are just at the entrance of Jasper National Park. In addition to outstanding views, each cabin includes a kitchen unit, living room, bathroom, sleeping area, and a patio or a gas fireplace. Ranging from one bedroom to three bedrooms, the cabins can lodge families and groups of all sizes.

The Gingerbread Cabin
If you’re looking for a single cabin rather than a series of cabins at a resort, this is the one for you. Overlooking the east gate to Jasper National Park, The Gingerbread Cabin features a kitchen, log furniture, and a wood-burning stove in the dining area. This log cabin offers a cottage with a loft. The main floor includes a dining area, living room and satellite TV with DVD player. We haven’t stayed here yet but we sincerely hope they include some gingerbread cookies.

Cabins in the Kananaskis
Just next to Banff and not far from Calgary lies the beautiful Kananaskis region, which is full of Rocky Mountain scenery, crystal-clear lakes, hiking trails, and stunning camping spots. It has some of the most unique and even luxurious cabin rentals in Alberta and there are also some incredible hikes in Kananaskis Country for those looking to score some views.
Mount Engadine Lodge
This lodge offers a slice of luxury in an area mostly known for camping. Located on the Smith Dorrien Highway, it’s also part of one of the top Alberta road trips, just one hour away from Canmore on a dirt road. They offer a number of accommodation options, one of which is cabins overlooking a beautiful meadow. Popular in both summer and winter, these cabins come with four meals: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and supper. Although the area is quite isolated, the cabins are right beside each other, so it’s not completely quiet. However, for those looking for modern amenities, good food, and the chance to be almost in the backcountry of the Kananaskis, this is a great choice.

Sundance Lodge
Located right across the highway from Nakiska Ski Resort, Sundance Lodge offers a range of accommodation options including trapper’s tents, tipis, and camping. Although they don’t have traditional cabins, the trapper’s tent is like a cross between cabin and tent. We’ve stayed in trapper’s tents at Rocky Mountain House National Historic Site and really loved the rustic vibe with the comfort of a bed. These units include a wooden floor, wood-frame beds with foam mattresses, a small kerosene heater, and an outdoor fire pit and picnic table.
Cabins in David Thompson Country
Located in between the Icefields Parkway and Rocky Mountain House is spectacular David Thompson Country, which offers the beauty of the Canadian Rockies with much fewer crowds. Home to some of our favourite cabin rentals in Alberta, this is a great spot to spend a few days in the wilderness and to see some of Alberta’s most beautiful waterfalls.
Expanse Cottages
So far, we’ve always stayed at Expanse Cottages when we visit Nordegg and the David Thompson region. They’re conveniently located just 5 minutes from Nordegg but are tucked deep into the woods, providing the escape we’re all looking for. All the cabins are fully equipped with a kitchen, a wood-burning fireplace, and a couch and TV. They also have an outdoor fire pit for each cabin.

Cheechako Cabins
Just next to Expanse Cottages are the Cheechako cabins, which are equally beautiful. We haven’t stayed here yet but they’re very similar to Expanse Cottages, so your choice will likely come down to what’s available. Although the area is not as famous as Banff, there’s also very little accommodation options, so things to do fill up fast.
Nature’s Getaway Nordegg
Nature’s Getaway Nordegg November is a peaceful getaway with all the comforts of home. Snuggle up with a book near the fireplace or sit out on the deck with nothing but the sounds of nature all around you. We stayed here once and we think it’s a great place for a family or friends getaway where can do some BBQs, play games on the back patio or relax in the hot tub while looking at the stars.
There is also a second cabin, The Quiet Deer Cabin available at Nature’s Getaway, as well. Perfect for a larger family getaway!

Rocky Mountain Cottage
This private woodland cottage has 3 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms, and sits next to crown land. Cabins in Clearwater County
Located on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains and sandwiched in-between the Cowboy Trail, the Rocky Mountains, and David Thompson Country, this unique area offers more of a wilderness experience in the backcountry and some truly unique cabin rentals in Alberta. Access to this area consists of dirt roads that start from towns such as Sundre and meader through the forest, likely passing a couple of families of wild horses. Talk about a true Albertan experience!
Bearberry Cabins
This beautiful mountain paradise offers both luxury cabins and camping options. Each cabin is different but they generally offer running water, a bathroom with a jacuzzi, two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, satellite TV, a private deck with a BBQ, and much more. In addition, the property is located next to 300 miles of Crown Land, which opens up the possibility of Quadding and Snowmobiling.
Panther River Lodge
Built-in 1979, this unique lodge offers charming log cabins with their own covered verandas, multiple layouts, bathrooms, satellite TVs, and WiFi. The main lodge has a wood-burning fireplace, hearty home-cooked meals, and is also home to the Rusted Rock Patio and Coffee Bar.
Panther River Retreat
Located at Sunset Guiding and Outfitters, which is a great place to go horseback riding, you’ll find the Panther River Retreat, which offers rustic cabins and camping options. Some cabins have bathrooms while others utilize the shared bathroom at the campsite. We stayed in one of the non-bathroom rustic cabins, which are small and cozy. They’re all next to the beautiful Panther River and they also serve food and drinks.
Cabins in Alberta: Northern Region
When it comes to camping along a beautiful lake or in a beautiful forest, it’s hard to beat Alberta’s north. Classifying what is Northern Alberta, however, depends on who you talk to. For us, we’re classifying the Northern Alberta region as everything north of Edmonton. If you look at a map, you’ll see that the northern region of Alberta is basically forest, lakes, and small towns, making it an ideal place for cabin rentals in Alberta and the opportunity to truly get away from it all.
Cabins in Cold Lake
Cold Lake is a massive lake that borders both Alberta and Saskatchewan. The city is actually quite modern and nice with a beautiful walking trail along the lake and a plethora of opportunities for fishing and outdoor activities.
Baywood Park and Cabins
This unique 137-acre property sits at a cross-section of the Canadian north, which includes a small lake, wooded areas, meadows, hills, and marshland. They offer year-round log cabins and an RV park.
Cabins in Lac La Biche
In 2020, we had the chance to visit Lac La Biche and were impressed at how beautiful the lake is as well as Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park. There’s lots of outdoor adventure here as well as some unique attractions as well.
Alberta Parks Cabins
Located right in Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park, Alberta Parks provides comfortable camping in both cabins and tipis. These cabins sleep up to 8 people and included an electric heater, lights, and electrical outlets, as well as a fridge, stove, microwave, and more. This park is great for bird-watching, fishing, and even paddle-boarding.
Kikino Cabins
Located at Kikino Silver Birch Resort on White Fish Lake, you’ll find rustic cabins and a campground. Cabins range from 1 to 2 bedrooms and include a deck facing the beautiful lake, a BBQ, full kitchen, air-conditioning, a fire pit, and more.
Elinor Lake Cabin Adventure
We love nature more than anything and so one of our favourite activities in Lac La Biche was spending a night on Elinor Lake with Off Road Adventures. Not only do they organize quadding tours but they’ve also created this glamping experience on a secluded piece of land along Elinor Lake. Accessible by a short boat ride, they’ll take you out there and take care of everything else. Our walled tent was heated by a wood stove, we had delicious stew cooked for us at night, and even the bathroom is heated by a wood fire. It truly is a luxurious rustic experience.
Hideaway Adventure Grounds
If you’re looking for a unique camping experience, Hideaway Adventure Grounds is a great option. Located within the Kikino Metis Settlement (just 40 minutes south of Lac La Biche), they offer back-to-the-basics, self-contained camping. No power, no water, and no wifi, but lots of stargazing and the sounds of the forest. In addition to beautiful walled tents, there are also empty campgrounds for those wanting to pitch their own tent.
What’s extra special about this place is that it’s owned by John Ritchie, a friendly Métis man with a lot of heart. In addition to camping, he also organized teachings for learning how to build a shelter, how to find food and water, how to perfect your fire-building techniques, how to cook on an open fire and use traditional tools. You can even learn how to make a pouch! That’s what we did! Oh, and as a bonus, John’s dog Buddy is the friendliest dog we’ve ever met.
Cabins Near Fort.McMurray
Believe it or not, I grew up in Fort.McMurray, but unlike most people who actually move to Fort Mac, I decided to leave. But it wasn’t for lack of beauty. Fort.McMurray has some beautiful country around it and I truly miss being a kid and jumping on a skidoo with my dad to go deep into the forest and find some random cabins. That stuff isn’t really possible anymore but there cabins you can rent!
Christina Lake Lodge
A family-oriented resort, Christina Lake Lodge offers an ideal setting to kick back, relax and enjoy the serenity of a gorgeous Northern Alberta lake. Stay in their rustic cabins, park your trailer in their RV sites or set up your tent in their campground. This massive lake is popular for fishing.

Grist Haven Lodge
Grist Lake Lodge is located 2.5 hours drive south of Fort.McMurray and about 200 km northeast of Edmonton. This small, deep lake has lake trout, whitefish, and northern pike, making it popular with fishers. Grist Haven Lodge is open year-round and offers accommodations to suit all your needs. It’s been a while since we’ve made it this far north but we did drive through it on our way to the Northwest Territories and it’s quite a beautiful spot for those looking to escape the big cities and score some cool cabin rentals in Alberta.

If you’re looking for a unique place to stay, where else can you stay in a national historic site? Offering cabins, trappers tents, and even tipi’s, Parks Canada offer you the chance to stay next to the North Saskatchewan River at a place that was once home to the Hudson Bay Trading Company. During the day, you can tour the site, which is a living history museum with costumed interpreters explaining a key part in Alberta and Canada’s history as well as some history of David Thompson, the man who mapped much of Canada we know today. If you opt for a trapper’s tent, you’ll even get a kit that allows you to start a fire with flint, bake bannock over the fire, and more!
The Prairie Creek Inn
Nestled just 17 km south of Rocky Mountain House, lies one of Canada’s top romantic getaways. They offer a number of accommodation options including luxurious cottages and treehouses. The Enchanted River Cottage
Featuring a patio with river views, a garden, and a terrace, The Enchanted River Cottage can be found in Drumheller, the dinosaur capital of the world! Hillcrest Adanac Adventures
Located in Hillcrest, these cabins are a great way to experience Crowsnest Pass. We stayed here with our whole family in 2020 and loved it. They’re super close to the Hillcrest Mine Disaster Cemetery and Memorial and they’re basically a mini-house with two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a couch, and a big TV. There’s also a fire pit outside and a small deck.
Charmed Family Resort
Whether you have kids or you’re just looking for something truly unique and right out of a fairytale, you won’t anything like the three cabins at Charmed Family Resort. Built to resemble the cabins from a variety of fairytales, these cabins will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a book. After building custom, luxury playhouses for 5 years, they decided to make full-sized playhouses that a whole family could enjoy.
Goat Mountain Getaway
Goat Mountain Get-A-Way is your alpine retreat with all the comforts of home. Located near Blairmore, this is the perfect hub to take advantage of all the activities this mountain community has to offer.
